How to Level Up Your Self Care Game

Self-care has become a vital part of my life and a way to keep my peace and joy. Over the last 7 or 8 years I have gone through some pretty difficult things including many miscarriages (7 to be exact), several hospital trips, an ectopic pregnancy (that nearly took my life) and a round of IVF. With those events, as well as some other non-baby related ones, I became overwhelmed with the trauma and all the emotions that go along with it.

For a short time, I shut down completely. Not allowing myself to feel much of anything because I didn’t know how to deal with any of it. I went through a time of depression and was not loving to myself. I floundered with who I was and believing that I wasn't enough just as I am. As time went by I recognized how much I was struggling, and I didn’t want to stay that way. I want to live my best life. So I began a journey of healing, restoration and of self-care.

Some of things I have done, or currently do, as part of that journey:

  • Hiring a life coach to work through and heal the trauma going all the way back to childhood. We also began changing my internal mindset programming.
  • Daily (or most days) journaling and meditation
  • Removing myself from potential triggers and recognizing that it’s okay if I need to make that choice for myself.
  • Moving my body with yoga, walking, and weightlifting.
  • Cleaning up my diet and cutting back on the alcohol consumption.
  • Reading encouraging books. Right now I am reading, “The Universe Has Your Back” by Gabrielle Bernstein.
  • Reading romance with guaranteed happy endings. There is nothing worse for me than a sad ending.

With that said, I also want to share with you some favorite things that have helped with self-care including some amazing new additions that were gifts from my husband and friends this last Christmas. This has sure leveled up my self-care game and I think it could really benefit yours as well.

Here are some of my favorite things for upgrading your self-care routine.

#1. Mediation pillow… I can’t sit on the floor cross legged for very long without being in a lot of pain when getting up. This pillow elevates me just enough and gives my bum just enough cushion to now sit comfortably, sometimes up to 30-45 minutes. I also use it when getting on the floor to play or read to the kids who come over.

#2. For the meditation itself, my favorite channel on YouTube is called “Great Meditation” (no affiliation whatsoever). This channel is great because they feature mostly short, 10–15 minute, guided mediations with all types of subjects. I pick one based on how I am feeling that day. Anything from chakra clearing, manifesting desires, to just feeling more positive. They really seem to have a little something for everyone. The two different voices I have heard are also amazingly easy to listen to which is especially important to me for a guided meditation.

#3. I'm a soft blanket loving girl! This last Christmas I got a furry pink one as a gift and I AM IN LOVE! It’s warm and so glam. I use it when I am working at my desk or sitting in meditation. If you or someone you know loves beautiful things, and the color pink, I highly recommend this one.

#4. In addition to a regular journal, I just added the Soul Therapy guided journal to my quiet time. So far, I'm really liking it and is especially helpful when I'm not sure what to write in my regular journal. Each day it prompts with a question that gets you thinking. I really think it’s going to help me level up.

*Odd tip - I really like having a nice, fancy pen to write with. Don’t ask why, but it makes a difference. So maybe try adding one and see how it makes you feel.
*Additional tip - Use headphones with some light instrumental music playing. This helps block outside sounds and encourages some flow in my writing. "Feminine Energy" on Pandora is perfect, or I have found a few on YouTube as well.

#5. I love taking baths and it’s one of my favorite ways to take a moment for myself. I can’t take a bath without either bubble bath or bath salts. I lean towards muscle relaxing or calming ones like Epsom salt with lavender.

*Level up tip - Use battery operated candles, turn off the bathroom light, and play some soft music. When you really want (or need) a treat, get a bath caddy (this one is similar but not exact to the one I have), your favorite happy book and a glass of wine and bam… ultimate self-care moment.

These are just a few things I have that really make me feel like I have leveled up my self-care game. With that said, no matter what or how you do it, I encourage you to just do it. Make the time for yourself, even if it’s just 15-20 minutes a day. You need it and you deserve it.
